Highlights from the 9.14.14 Sunday Shows

sunday-shows_304Secretary of State John Kerry on CBS’s “Face the Nation” : “This is a strategy coming together as the coalition comes together and the countries declare what they are prepared to do. But I want it to be absolutely clear out of this discussion we’re having that every single aspect of the president’s strategy, and what is needed to be done in order to accomplish our goal, has been offered by one country or multiple countries and all bases are covered.”

White House chief of staff Denis McDonough on ABC’s “This Week” : “We will be very candid with the American people, as the president has been. We will work very closely and consult with Congress on this effort. And we believe that we have the right strategy that the president laid out for the country on Wednesday night, to make sure that we degrade and ultimately defeat ISIL.”

McDonough on NBC’s “Meet the Press” : “This is an effort that, like in Yemen and Somalia, where we will take the fight to our enemies without putting our ground troops into the effort. We need ground troops, that’s why we want this program to train the opposition, that’s currently pending in Congress. And that’s why we want to make sure that this coalition bring Sunnis to the fight. And that’s what we’re going to do.”

McDonough on “FOX News Sunday” : “In as much as we’ve been at war with al Qaeda since the first days we got into this office, we obviously in similar fashion are at war with ISIL. What we’ve also said is this not going to be like the Iraq war, we’re not talking about tens of thousands of troops on the ground, but rather, we’re talking about us using our unique capabilities of airpower, of ISR, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance, and supporting those on the ground who are fighting ISIL, including in Syria, the Syrian opposition that’s fighting ISIL right now.”
