Hack iPhone OS 2.x without Jailbreaking? Info to be Presented at Black Hat Security Conference

The annual Black Hat Security Conference takes place in Las Vegas during the last week of July. A Technology Review article…

iPhone Hackers Get a Break

…reports that two researchers will present a technique that allows found a way to load an application on the iPhone as disguised (so to speak) as data and then execute it using one of several holes in iPhone OS 2.x. This would allow for malware as well as previously unauthorized OS 2.0 apps (like tethering) to be installed without jailbreaking the iPhone. The article does not specifically state that this technique is restricted iPhone OS 2.0, but I’m assuming this is the case. We’ll probably find out in a few weeks if it also applies to OS 3.0 which will be released tomorrow.
