Grandma Mary Has Fallen But She Has Gotten Up

We previously brought you the news that Politico’s James Hohmann’s grandmother tumbled down a flight of stairs earlier this week while going to retrieve her LAT newspaper. Here’s an update.

Hohmann’s grandmother has been released from the hospital and is on the mend. (Maybe her grandson should send her a fruit basket like this, hint hint.)

“I spoke with my grandmother after the hospital released her tonight,” Hohmann wrote to FishbowlDC. “She has a ‘humongous’ brace on her leg, and her hip – which popped out of its socket – still hurts pretty badly. She’s thrilled to be recuperating at my uncle’s house, though, and hopes to hit the pool as soon as doctors will allow her to.”

Hohmann wrote that Grandma Mary took “time to praise the passerby who stopped to call 911, the firefighters who rushed to assist her and the medical professionals who treated her at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.”

The scribe said Grandma has been following the health care debate for the last 14 months. “So the irony in the timing of this accident doesn’t escape us,” he said. “My father joked today that maybe she wouldn’t have hurt herself if she just got her news from – instead of reading a newspaper’s dead tree edition.”

In all seriousness, he added, “as much as almost anyone else, Grandma Mary helped ferment my passion for public service. In fact, she bought me my first Almanac of American Politics back in 1994.”

Best wishes to Grandma Mary for a speedy recovery.
