Google's NFC Mobile Ad & Payment Play: Hotpot, Gingerbread, Zetawire

Google has not had much luck with social network product launches (Wave, Buzz, Latitude). But, they do know how to see web ads and how to find new ways to do so. For example, it turned out that Google’s Hotpot location stickers were enabled for NFC (Near Field Communications) detection. Next we learned that Google Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread) supports NFC hardware in the next round of of some Android phones (like the Nexus S). Next up? How about grabbing some talent that apparently knows how to deal with the ins and outs of mobile payment? And, what better way to enable mobile payment (and mobile ads) than using NFC as the mechanism for enabling everything? That’s one theory behind the purchase of a startup that focuses on mobile payments.

Google adds to NFC with Zetawire

I sure hope people start locking their phones as they become ever more integrated into their lives.
