Less than a month after “google” was added to Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary as a verb, Google is warning media organizations that such use of the word could be a trademark violation.

According to the London Independent, the company has “fired off a series of legal letters” to media organizations worldwide.

Via a Google spokesman: “We think it’s important to make the distinction between using the word to describe using Google to search the internet, and using the word Google to describe searching the internet.”

The spokesman called the trademark issue “serious.”
