Google Hangout Error Causing Messages to Go to Unintended Recipients

As of last night, users on Google Hangout noticed a major error in the messaging platform that caused duplication of messages to several unintended recipients.

If you are using Hangouts for private messaging, you should be aware that messages sent during affected hours were insecure and should not be treated as private. A representative from Google has been posting the following response to angry Google Hangout users:

As you may know from Moritz T’s post above, there was an issue today that affected some people using Google’s instant messaging services. We have since identified the problem, stopped it from recurring, and are currently applying a fix.

We apologize to anyone affected.

For further updates please refer to the Apps Status Dashboard.

The latest update to the Apps Status Dashboard as of 7:15 AM this morning reads:

We are continuing to investigate this issue. We will provide an update by 9/26/13 9:00 AM detailing when we expect to resolve the problem.
Earlier today we identified an issue with Google Talk messages sent between 22:00 PST and 01:30 PST. Any messages sent after 01:30 PST are unaffected.

Some users are concerned the security breach might have caused private messages to be accessible to outsiders (other than the NSA of course). User Arka Biswas and other are considering a move to other platforms as a result of the insecure error:

i strongly agree that this is the most threatening thing i have ever faced and that to from the google which was least expected.I dont know whether this can be a legal issue of security breaching ? but there certainly things to be done from their side to fix this up.I am not sure after this i can use gtalk, gmail and other application as normally i used to be doing all this years. This is really disappointing.

We will provide updates as they occur, in the meantime, you can read about the bug and see the rest of the messages on Google’s forum. Let us know if you were affected in the comment section below.

Update: Gmail in Chrome is experiencing some problems as well, but has not been addressed. When  hover over  tabs, the entire window goes black. I’ve notified Google, and am waiting on a response. Here is the latest from the app dashboard:

Google Talk service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.
We have since identified the problem and are currently applying a fix. We’re very sorry to anyone affected and will provide an update when full service is restored. Earlier today we identified an issue with Google Talk messages sent between 22:00 PDT and 01:30 PDT. Any messages sent after 01:30 PDT are unaffected.
