Getting Past the "Have You Ever Been Convicted" Box on an Application

It’s a an issue 10 percent of job candidates have to deal with, but it can be a quick application killer. The “have you ever been convicted of a crime box” is blunt, with little room for explanation. Yet, checking that box could end your chances quickly, even though it is illegal for companies to discriminate based on the offense alone.

But who knows how to enforce that? One person with this problem emailed into Fortune‘s Anne Fisher for advice.
