Game of Thrones Ascent now playable on Facebook

Disruptor Beam’s much-anticipated social role-playing game Game of Thrones Ascent is now in open beta on Facebook.

Until now, Disruptor Beam has stayed relatively quiet about the game since it was announced last May, occasionally teasing out details and artwork on its blog to keep interest up.

Game of Thrones Ascent is set in the world of George R. R. Martin’s wildly popular fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, which was adapted by HBO into the award-winning television show Game of Thrones. Players are cast as a minor noble in the world of Westeros who happens to be drafted into the service of King Robert Baratheon. Over time, these nobles are able to build up their keep, cultivate their land and raise an army.

Based on a quick playthrough, Game of Thrones Ascent seems to be a social MMO, much in the same vein as 5th Planet Games’ flagship title Dawn of the Dragons or Kabam’s Kingdoms of Camelot, though missions do seem to offer some flexibility when it comes to a players’ moral alignment. Like other such titles, there are social mechanics that offer users the ability to ally with one another in order to achieve milestones, as well as player-versus-player gameplay.

Licensed games are often regarded warily by video gamers, though social titles seem to be better-received than their mainstream brethren (especially when it comes to IP with insanely devoted followings like Game of Thrones or The Avengers). Prior to Ascent, the Game of Thrones brand has received a few video game adaptations, which have largely been treated to middling reviews.  The timing of the game’s launch is perfect, too, as HBO is gearing up to premiere the show’s third season at the end of March and anticipation among fans is working into a fever pitch.

Stay tuned for our review of the game soon.
