Free-to-play games developer Socialspiel has announced a six-figure funding round, as well as a change of CEO. The Austrian game developer is comprised of former RockStar Games developers, which, combined, have contributed to the development of over 50 games for console, mobile and more.

The €200,000 angel round of investment was led by German angel fun FLOOR13, and joined by Mike Borras and Clemens Beer, both industry veterans. In addition, Beer will join Socialspiel’s Board, while Borras takes the reigns as CEO.

Speaking of the announcements, Socialspiel co-founder and COO Helmut Hutterer was optimistic about the company’s future.

“We founded Socialspiel during a chaotic time within the games industry,” Hutterer said. “As we’ve navigated through monumental platform shifts we’ve been blessed to create beautiful games which have touched hundreds of thousands of people thanks to our incredible team. I’m extremely excited about the future of cross platform free to play games and with Mike joining the team plus the experience, talent, and technology we’ve built during the past few years, we’re going to continue growing Socialspiel into one of the industry’s rising stars.”

Socialspiel’s newest project is Asterix & Friends, which has been developed in partnership with Sproing and Deutsche Telekom. The game is available to play for free in browsers, and sees players building a village while completing quests and managing resources created inside that village. Players can hunt, go fishing, and enter into combat against the Roman army that’s taken up residence outside the player’s land.

“After working with Helmut on some of the greatest games in history during our time at Rockstar Games, and advising Socialspiel since its foundation, I continue to be amazed at the incredible, high quality games our small team is producing,” added new CEO Mike Borras. “Helmut and the Socialspiel team have come a long way and it’s an honor for me to come on board and contribute where I can to our strong growth moving forward. Thanks to this round of funding we’ve been able to grow both the size of our team and company, enabling us to continue developing more and more spectacular games with some of the best partners in the world.”
