Free PDF Book: Programming Windows Phone 7 by Charles Petzold

Anyone who has even dabbled in programming for Microsoft Windows has heard of Charles Petzold. His 1988 book “Programming Windows” or one his other books probably has sat well worn on the shelf of every developer since its release. If you are interested in writing software for Windows Phone 7, you definitely want to take advantage of the free PDF version of his new book available from his website.

Programming Windows Phone 7

In the book’s introduction, Petzold writes: This book is a gift from the Windows Phone 7 team at Microsoft to the programming community, and I am proud to have been a part of it.

So, yes, you can download a free copy and not feel guilty. I’m sure Microsoft made the writing effort well worth Petzold’s time. The book is actually two books. As Petzold goes on to say:

Yes, Programming Windows Phone 7 is truly a free download, but for those readers who still love paper – as I certainly do – this book will also be available (for sale) divided into two fully- indexed print editions: Microsoft Silverlight Programming for Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft XNA Framework Programming for Windows Phone 7.

The PDF book is a massive 997 pages. I tossed the PDF into iBooks on the iPad for easier reading.

Petzold’s most recent blog entry also provides a brief view into the process of getting a Windows Phone 7 app into the Windows Phone Marketplace.
