Foursquare Giving Businesses Info They Can Actually Use

Location based services like Foursquare and Gowalla are simultaneously facsinating and annoying to me. I’m fascinated that GPS and A-GPS technology has become so readily available that nearly everyone can easily report their locations. I’m also fascinated that so many people are willing to be so transparent with revealing their every move. I’m annoyed because these people (many of whom are personal friends) are cluttering up my tweet stream with their locations and “mayorships”. I’m interested in what they have to say/tweet but absolutely not interested in the huge amount of “noise” thrown into the tweet stream by these location-based social network “games”. There is the option to simply stop following there location chatterboxes. And, that’s exactly what I’ve done when the noise level becomes too high.

I have to admit, though, that I find the latest Foursquare effort very interesting…

Foursquare Introduces New Tools for Businesses

These tools provide businesses the ability to give businesses more information about Foursquare users who “check-in” to their place of business. Businesses can use this data to engage with their customers in a more meaningful way.

Does this mean I’m going to install a Foursquare app on my phone? Not unless it means I can get 50% discounts at the local Apple Store if I become its mayor 🙂
