Fort Worth Star-Telegram Plans 28 Layoffs

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram will lay off 28 staff members and eliminate 17 open positions, the paper reported on itself yesterday.

“Although we’ve seen improvement in revenue trends recently, we still need to reduce our expenses going forward,” said president and publisher Gary Wortel.

The paper, owned by McClatchy Co., last downsized in March 2009, when 100 jobs were cut.

Also in March 2009, 24/7 Wall Street placed the Star Telegram on a top ten list of papers predicted to go out of business by the second half of 2010.
