Former Director of SPD Used Impoverished Designers’ Money To Buy Fur Coat

With sadness, then outrage, we read the news that Bride Whelan, the former SPD director who apparently “everybody loved,” was convicted of grand larceny for charging over $150,000 of personal purchases to SPD credit cards.

Whelan–pictured at right in a respectable cloth coat–bought airline tickets, hotel rooms, makeup, medical exams and a $2,500 fur coat on SPD’s dime from 1999 to 2004. Let’s see…with SPD’s annual membership dues at $195, that coat represented the life savings of almost 13 out-of-work art directors. None of whom will ever possess a scrap of mink as they claw their way into brutal mid-level publishing jobs. For shame.
