FishbowlDC Interview with <em>Cap File</em>'s Elizabeth Thorp

Elizabeth Thorp has been in DC for 21 years (she moved here when she was 10, y'all), and thought she was perfectly happy working in PR and politics (and creating the upscale travel site Poshbrood.com) till, she says, a great opportunity just fell in her lap. She's been Editor-in-Chief of the best luxury and life-style magazine in town, Capitol File, since September and has been having a blast. Niche COO Katherine Nicholls and Capitol File Managing Editor Mandi Norwood wooed her to the job, and since then she has been hard at work bringing more depth and substance to the famously glitzy pub. Recent articles have included a piece by Jake Tapper on the Newseum's Anchorman exhibit, and a profile of vegan, Hindu Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI). Also raw cookie dough What three words describe your editorial vision for Capitol File? Politics, Power, Philanthropy wrapped in Chanel Who should TIME make 2013 Person of the Year? BatKid, no contest. If you were a carbonated beverage, which would you be? Why? Fresca -- bubbly, snarky, fun, smarter than you might think. You’re developing a signature scent. What would you call the cologne? Eau de Bethesda or Trois Filles No. 7 just because it sounds fancy, I have three girls and my birthday is on the 7th. More after the jump. Who or what inspires you? Hilary Clinton, Norah Ephron, Malala or any razor smart, hardworking person with a sense of humor. What’s your favorite band, song or musical genre? Sting, The Police, Yo Yo Ma. Did I mention Sting? What word(s) do you routinely misspell? Accomodations -- see? I did it again. What swear word do you use most often? The F-bomb. WTF? I'm trying to quit. When and why did you last laugh so hard you had tears in your eyes? Catching up with the divine Kate Bennett at one of David Bradley's dinners. How often do you Google yourself? I don't. Plus, there are lots of Elizabeth Thorp gravestone images -- it's pretty creepy. If you could influence journalism in one way right now what would it be? I'd like to influence my way into a spot on House of Cards or Colbert Report. Ever been arrested? No but I was voted "Most likely to be jailed" in high school. It's a long story and above your security clearance. What and where was your first job? Washington, DC 1992. I was working on a NARAL Campaign during the day, waiting tables at Boogie's Diner in Georgetown at night. What’s your most embarrassing career moment? I worked on a few shows in the mid-atlantic for Lollapollooza in 1992. I called Ice-Cube, "Ice-T." It was not good. What’s the worst thing you’ve ever said to an editor (or vice versa)? Vice versa -- I was told that a c-level celeb wouldn't do a 5 minute phoner unless he was the cover. So I asked the person in a nice way: "Are you high? You and I both know that a Cap File cover isn't in the cards." I'm very direct but always polite. Who should just call it a day? Dr. Phil, Nancy Grace, Elisabeth Hasslebeck, Wendy Williams...there are just so many to choose from! Finally, please come up for a question for our next FishbowlDC interviewee. Make it good.
