Finnish Plus-Size Model Was Inspired by Vogue, Elle

Meet Heidi Lichen.

Every once in a while, we like to take a look at the front pages of foreign newspapers. The subject matter chosen and the way topics are presented can be intriguing. On the heels of the 2016 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover featuring Ashley Graham, check out the March 26-28 edition of Finnish tabloid Italehti:

That’s plus-size model Heidi Lichen. In the accompanying essay, she explains how her aspirations began (the translation is ours):

I’ve always wanted to be a model. My cousin and I were already as children interested in fashion and models of the world. We made our own fashion magazine. Another cousin gave me for the gift of communion a big pile of old Vogue and Elle magazines. I was so happy!

I followed all seasons of America’s Next Top Model. I dreamed of becoming a model or working with a fashion designer, but I did not believe my dream would ever be realized.

A couple of years ago, my mother noticed an ad for a model competition. She suggested that I should enter the competition.

Lichen did not win that competition, but the experience bolstered her confidence and led to a contract with the modeling agency Fondi. There’s video in the article, and a lot of great photos if you scroll down. She mentions that one of her role models is the aforementioned Graham. At press time, the piece is one of the most read on the Italehti website.
