FEMA Announced Android App & New Disaster Text Messaging Service

The thing about disasters is that there is, unfortunately, always a next one. Here’s one more tool to add to your disaster preparedness toolkit. FEMA (the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency) announced the release of their first app for Android smartphones and tablets.

New Digital Tools: FEMA App and Text Message Updates

The provides:

– Preparedness information for different types of disasters
– An interactive checklist for emergency kits
– A section to plan emergency meeting locations
– Information on how to stay safe and recover after a disaster
– A map with FEMA Disaster Recovery Center locations and Shelters
– General ways the public can get involved before and after a disaster
– The FEMA blog.

You can find the free FEMA for Android app in the Android Market.

For those with an Android device, FEMA also announced a text messaging service to get preparation tips, find the nearest shelter and locate the nearest DRC (Disaster Recovery Center).

– Text PREPARE to 43362 (4FEMA) to sign up to receive monthly disaster safety tips

– Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter in your area (example: shelter 12345)

– Text DRC + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest disaster recovery center in your area (for example, if you lived in Annandale, Virginia with a Zip Code of 22003, you’d text DRC 22003).
