Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg may be in no danger of losing his job anytime soon, but the perception of the job he is doing took a big-time hit over the past year, at least according to the annual Top CEOs in 2019 list from job and recruiting site Glassdoor.
As a result, Zuckerberg dropped to No. 55 in Glassdoor’s 2019 rankings (still with a 94% approval rate from employees) from No. 16 in 2018.
Zuckerberg placed fourth in 2016 and at No. 10 in 2017. He and Apple’s Tim Cook are the only CEOs to make the list in all seven years that it has been published, although Glassdoor noted that Salesforce’s Marc Benioff has done so, as well, but he and Keith Block were honored together this year.
Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware, soared to the top spot on this year’s list and a 99% approval rating, after coming in at No. 78 (92% approval) last year.
Other notable tech CEOs that cracked the top 100 included T-Mobile’s John Legere (No. 4, 99% approval rating) Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen (No. 5, 98%), Microsoft’s Satya Nadella (No. 6, 98%), LinkedIn’s Jeff Weiner (No. 8, 97%), HubSpot’s Brian Halligan (No. 16, 96%), Salesforce’s Benioff and Block (No. 17, 96%), PayPal’s Dan Schulman (No. 34, 95%), Cisco Systems’ Chuck Robbins (No. 40, 95%), Google’s Sundar Pichai (No. 46, 94%) and Apple’s Cook (No. 69, 92%).
Tech CEOs accounted for the most among the top 100, at 27, followed by healthcare (12) and manufacturing (8).
Notable tech CEOs among the top 50 for small and midsized businesses included Sprout Social’s Justyn Howard (No. 26 on that list, with a 98% approval rating) and AppLovin’s Adam Foroughi (No. 27, 98%).
Glassdoor said the average CEO approval rating is 69%, adding that it is the second-largest job site in the U.S., with more than 67 million unique monthly users, over 49 million reviews and insights for some 900,000 companies.
