Facebook Takes Another Page Out Of Twitter’s Book With Trending Topics Module

Earlier this year, Facebook poached Twitter’s most iconic marker, the hashtag.

Now, the Wall Street Journal reports that Facebook is taking another page out of Twitter’s book in testing a trending topics module.

The trending topics section, styled similarly to Twitter’s trends box, is being tested for select users:

The Wall Street Journal reports,

“Like Twitter, Facebook’s trending section will reflect popular hashtags and topics that are generating a lot of conversation. For example, Facebook’s algorithm would group all public conversations mentioning #MLK and “Martin Luther,” under one topic in the trending section, such as ‘Martin Luther King, Jr.'”

From a user experience standpoint, Facebook trending topics would be a useful portal for news and hot cultural intel. But from a business standpoint, the feature is a definite threat to Twitter in terms of making a play for advertisers’ dollars and owning the real-time news space (which Twitter has solidly claimed since its inception).

What do you think about Facebook possibly implementing a trending topics section in your news feed?
