The social network confirmed the demise of the feature, which seemed to eternally struggle to gain popularity.
A Facebook spokesperson said in an email to Social Pro Daily: “We’re always listening to our community and working to make Facebook a personally relevant and real-time experience. We’ve heard from people that News Feed is the best place to stay up to date with the people and pages they follow, so we are removing Ticker.”
When the social network officially introduced Ticker in September 2011, it said in a Note: “Ticker shows you the same stuff you were already seeing on Facebook, but it brings your conversations to life by displaying updates instantaneously. Now when a friend comments, asks a question or shares something like a check in, you’ll be able to join the conversation right away. Click on anything in ticker to see the full story and chime in—without losing your place.”
Despite managing to hang around for more than six years, Ticker never really caught on with users, and it was often removed by browser plugins, as well as by Facebook itself during events such as News Feed redesigns.
News of the demise of Ticker first appeared in this Help Community forum post last week, with someone from the Facebook Help Team responding, “The feature is no longer available.”
