Facebook Reach 200 Million Users, Time to do Some Good Deeds

Facebook is about to reach its 200 millionth user and none other than its founder Mark Zuckerberg is reporting this at the official Facebook blog. In fact, as I write this post, that 200 millionth user may have already signed up to Facebook. So, what does this mean? Well, aside from the obvious fact that Twitter is not the only web 2.0/social site that is growing exponentially, Facebook might just still be the king fo social networking. For Facebook, reaching the 200 million user mark is very special, moreso for Zuckerberg who may have never thought that his little project way back in college could become the Internet’s biggest social player. Wide a huge user base, Zuckerberg and the rest of the Facebook crew could very well claim that Facebook has successfully reached a massive user base expanding across geographic boundaries.

A good proof would be the Facebook user grotth heat map showing how Facebook has expanded worldwide. And with such big userbase it is but logical to think now how Facebook could be put into better use, aside from being a premier online communication channel.

So, to celebrate this milestone and to perhaps show the world that Facebook could be put into better, and really “social” use, Facebook has launched a campaign aptly titled “Facebook for Good“. If you’re a Facebook user, you may share how Facebook has changed your life for the good or for the good of other people. It’s a Facebook fan page for sharing how Facebook was able to influence individual to do good. In addition, Facebook has also teamed up with 16 charity/advocacy groups who also want to make the world a better place for all of us. All you need to do is to purchase any of the featured gifts and 90-95% of the proceeds of these gifts will be donated to a charitable organization.

Quite a good effort from Facebook to show its good side, and we could only applaud Zuckerberg and the rest of the Facebook crew for this advocacy. Although, a little more concrete would have been a better way to show its goodness.
