After rumors of Facebook launching a timed messaging service similar to Snapchat swirled, the social network Friday officially announced Poke — an iPhone application where users can send messages, photos, videos, or pokes that expire in seconds.

With Poke, currently available just for the iPhone, Facebook users can send friends a poke (long a hallmark of the social network) or a message that disappears in one, three, five, or 10 seconds.

After the chosen time, the message will erase itself from the phone.
