Facebook announced that it will match up to $1 million in donations to the American Red Cross in support of relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Florence.

The social network activated its Safety Check tool for Florence last Friday, enabling people to mark themselves safe and check on the wellbeing of family and friends.

Facebook was already close to its goal, saying that more than 30,000 people have contributed over $970,000 toward the match.

The social network said there have been more than 2,200 posts from people requesting help via its Community Help feature

And the fundraiser created by the American Red Cross had raised over $16,000 through five days.

The organization said in the story on its fundraiser, “As many as 100,000 people may need emergency shelter, and the Red Cross is working with state and local officials to support these efforts. More than 1,600 people spent Tuesday night in 36 Red Cross and community shelters in South Carolina and North Carolina. Dozens more evacuation centers are opening today.”
