Facebook Officially Launches Groups For Schools

Facebook has officially debuted student-only groups for colleges and universities. The capability underwent testing last year with a few schools but is now rolling it out more broadly, a spokesperson said via email.

Facebook has officially debuted student-only groups for colleges and universities. The capability underwent testing last year with a few schools but is now rolling it out more broadly, a spokesperson said via email.

The feature adds a much-needed layer of security to groups. Recently quashed outbreaks of malware have included bogus alumni networks, along with friend requests from marketers or bots masquerading as former classmates.

Here’s how Facebook described  in a blog post:

Today we’re announcing groups forschools, which allow people with an active school email address to join groups at their college or university.

You can join a group for your major to discuss classes, for your sorority to plan upcoming events, or for your dorm to share photos.

We are also introducing file sharing for these groups, to make it even easier to share lecture notes, sports schedules or class assignments.
