Facebook Finally Rolls Out Timeline

No brand-specific profile pages at this time, Facebook says

We had to wait a little while for it, but Facebook’s redesigned Timeline profile has finally arrived.

Nearly three months after announcing the new feature, Facebook today announced on its blog that Timeline is now available to users around the world.

“Timeline gives you an easy way to rediscover the things you shared and collect your most important moments,” said Facebook engineer Paul McDonald in a blog post today. “It also lets you share new experiences, like the music you listen to or the miles you run.”

As Facebook said at its developers conference in September, Timeline allows users to share more of their personal history—and potentially their entire life story—on the social network.

The new design is slightly wider, more visually engaging, and offers a much more comprehensive view of each user.

At the top of each new page is a huge photo that users select to express themselves. As they scroll down the page, they’ll see all of their activities, posts, and photos as they happened in reverse chronological order. Facebook members can star favorite posts to enlarge them or elect to completely hide certain items.

The new pages include all activities from the first day that users joined Facebook, but they can go back in time and add major events, including those that preceded the moment they opened a Facebook account. 

In addition to rolling out Timeline worldwide, Facebook said it was launching Timeline for Android and for touch mobile devices at m.facebook.com.

When asked about Timeline pages for brands, a Facebook spokeswoman said that they are focusing on individual members and have nothing more to announce at this time.

Last month, Facebook told Adweek that since announcing Timeline and making it available to developers in September, more than 1 million users signed up for the beta version so that they could access Timeline. TechCrunch reported last week that the number is closer to 2 million.
