Facebook Lauded As Best Tech Employer

Facebook has taken Google’s crown as the best tech company to work for. The Palo Alto-based social networking site won the accolade from Business Insider based on employee reviews on Glassdoor. Facebook staff report that the company doesn’t skimp on any of the usual Silicon Valley perks – such as great food and a casual workplace – but has a special appeal because of the independence it grants its employees.

Employees describe a lack of office politics, few meddling middle managers, and the ability to work across different groups. The company is also known for its “boot camp” to get new engineering hires quickly up to speed.

Employee comments on Glassdoor include:

“The people here are both brilliant and humble, making for an incredibly collaborative environment for building awesome new stuff. Management process is also great – very hands off, lots of freedom to the engineers to work on what they are interested in, make important decisions. Lots of trust and responsibility in engineers.”

“The biggest downside is the organized chaos (although that’s also a plus). At times it can be a bit too chaotic, though even that’s improving.”

Previously Facebook was only given an “honorable mention” on the list because it didn’t have at least 25 reviews of both the company and its chief executive, making its score “incomplete”.

The shakeup bumps Mountain View-based Google to number two. Employees at the search giant enjoy the perks and the “fine” engineering talent but are frustrated by middle management. However, employee satisfaction with Google chief executive Eric Schmidt is higher at 97% than his Facebook counterpart, Mark Zuckerberg, who scored 92%.

Adobe, MITRE, Apple, TripAdisor, Intuit, QUALCOMM, FactSet and National Instruments round out the top ten.
