Facebook and Instagram users remembered those who are no longer with us in August, as late singer Aretha Franklin and late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) were among Facebook IQ’s Hot Topics for the month.

Former President Barack Obama also cracked Instagram’s list in the people topic, while Facebook users chatted about Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

The National Football League dominated sports talk on Facebook in August, as the league itself, as well as the Green Bay Packers and the team’s quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, carried the sports category. Meanwhile, sports fans on Instagram talked up soccer’s Premier League, golfer Tiger Woods and the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers.

In the entertainment category, the MTV Video Music Awards dominated Instagram and fared fairly well on Facebook, as well. The VMAs were joined by the Teen Choice Awards on Instagram and by Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj on Facebook.

Facebook and Instagram users were already looking forward to September in August, as Labor Day and kindergarten were Hot Topics in the holidays and events category on both platforms.

Febreze and the Nintendo Switch were brands and products Hot Topics on Facebook last month, while Instagram users talked about LaFerrari and LastPass.

Finally, in the food and drink category, Facebook users were thirsty for Smirnoff, while Instagrammers chowed down on Chef Boyardee.

Facebook IQ measured subjects that drove disproportionately high volumes of discussion on both social platforms, marking the latest in a Facebook-Adweek Hot Topics monthly series that began in 2015.
