Facebook acquires PrivateCore

Facebook announced today that it has acquired PrivateCore, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based secure server technology company.

While terms of the deal were not disclosed, both companies say they are aligned with the same vision of security moving forward.

A Facebook spokesperson said in a statement:

PrivateCore and Facebook share a vision of a more connected, secure world. We plan to deploy PrivateCore’s groundbreaking technology into Facebook’s server stack to help further our mission to protect the people who use our service.

The move comes just as it was reported that Russian hackers stole more than 1 billion usernames and passwords from hundreds of thousands of websites this week.

PrivateCore is a venture-backed startup founded in 2012 by security veterans from VMware and Google.

CEO Oded Horovitz wrote in a blog post:

Since the beginning, we have worked tirelessly on our technology to protect servers from malware threats, unauthorized physical access, and malicious hardware devices. Working together with Facebook, there is a huge opportunity to pursue our joint vision at scale with incredible impact.

PrivateCore’s vCage secures servers with software-based attestation, full-memory encryption, and operating system hardening, making it safer to run any application in outsourced, hosted or cloud environments.

Facebook has also been working tirelessly to keep data secure on its site. More than a year ago it finished implementing HTTPS encryption by default and has been working to secure all data center traffic with additional protections.

Facebook’s Chief Security Officer Joe Sullivan wrote in a Facebook timeline post:

I believe that PrivateCore’s technology and expertise will help support Facebook’s mission to help make the world more open and connected, in a secure and trusted way. Over time, we plan to deploy PrivateCore’s technology directly into the Facebook server stack. I can’t wait to have them join Facebook.
