European Commission Investigates eBook Publishers

The European book business is under scrutiny from the European Commission, which is investigating if eBook publishers are breaking and EU antitrust rules.

The Register UK reports: “The regulators said it carried out “unannounced inspections” at ebook publishing companies in several member states because it has reason to believe they may have ‘violated EU antitrust rules that prohibit cartels and other restrictive practices’. European officials were accompanied by local competition regulators.”

Last month, the Office of Fair Trading in the UK began investigating eBook pricing and the relationships between publishers and retailers after getting complaints from consumers.
