Employment Fell 131k In July; Unemployment Rate Unchanged

The U.S. lost 131,000 jobs in July, and the unemployment rate remained at 9.5 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Federal government employment fell by 143,000 as that many temporary census workers ended their assignments. Private-sector employment rose by 71,000.

The number of unemployed people remained mostly steady at 14.6 million. There are also 2.6 million “marginally attached” workers, those who wanted a job but were not counted as officially unemployed because they had not looked for a job in the past four weeks.
