Emerging Top-Grossing iOS Apps: Past Top Paid & Free Apps Rise This Week

New titles have breached the top grossing iOS apps charts. Though only one genuinely new iPhone title made it into the top ten, the majority of applications were actually release relatively recently. Games, like always, were very prominent on the iPhone. While they were present on the iPad, digital magazines and productivity apps proved most lucrative. New Titles Within Top Grossing iPhone Apps List MetalStorm: Online -- Starting out the list this week is MetalStorm: Online; in at #9. Free to play, MetalStorm is an online multiplayer -- which is can be either competitive or cooperative -- air combat simulator that makes use of gyroscopic controls (on 4th generation iPhones) and optional in-game voice chat. The game is developed by Seattle-based iOS developer Z2Live, who recently raised a second round of funding led by Draper Fisher Jurveston. The game was released May 12th and monetizes via in-app purchases. Its iPad version is currently ranked at #14 for the top paid iPad apps list. Army of Darkness Defense -- Profiled yesterday, Army of Darkness Defense -- which was also #10 on yesterday's top paid iPhone and iPad apps lists -- has appeared today at #13 for the top grossing iPhone app list and #19 for iPad. Centered around the third installment of the Evil Dead film series, through a licensing deal with MGM Studios, players control Ash Williams as they protect the Necronomicon from the deadite hordes in a tug-of-war style strategy game. Released May 12th, the game is currently on sale for $0.99 on iPhone and $2.99 on iPad. Its developer is Backflip Studios, a Colorado-based mobile developer best known for their Paper Toss franchise; which breached the 50 million download milestone earlier this year. Hipstamatic -- Hipstamatic is another new face to the top grossing list that appeared on yesterday's top paid chart. In at #27, this $1.99 photography app is reminiscent of analog photography, hosting several lenses, flashes, and other effects. Its rise is due, mostly, to a May 14th update, that has included new lenses, new "HipstaPaks" of lenses, flashes, and so on that are purchasable in-app as a purchase, an social sharing via Twitter. The application is made by the small, San Francisco-based Synthetic Corp. The company has been around since 2006 and whose handful of other iOS titles center around photography. Bloons TD 4 -- Moving all the way down to #40, we come across a game that appeared a few weeks ago on the top paid iPad charts, Bloons TD 4. Created by Scottish iOS and portable game console developer Digital Goldfish, the $2.99 game places users into a cartoonish, tower defense-style game where players use monkeys to stop a horde of invading "bloons" (basically balloons). Bloons TD 4 was updated recently on May 11th, granting users a new and more challenging map dubbed DNA Test. Office Jerk -- Earlier this month, free-top-play game, Office Jerk rose all the way to #1 on the top free iPhone apps list (currently it is #7). Now, the game from Fluik appears at #41 this week in the top grossing charts. Last updated May 3rd, the game offers a bit of stress relief as users toss random office supplies an their goodie-two-shoes cubicle neighbor. The title monetizes via advertisements and in-app purchases for item packs and ad removal. As for Fluik, they are an iPad and iPhone developer based out of Edmonton, Canada who notes its games being downloaded over a million times with a a handful of past titles, including Office Jerk, breaching the top five on various App Store top charts in multiple countries. New Titles Within Top Grossing iPad Apps List Vanity Fair iPad Edition -- Condé Nast Digital is the digital arm of Condé Nast, the New York-based publisher of magazine brands such as Vogue, Glamour, and The New Yorker (whose digital version has reached #1 on the top grossing iPad list recently). Vanity Fair iPad Edition is their latest venture and the free-to-download app is currently ranked at #12. A digital version of the analog magazine, the app is monetized through in-app purchases of individual monthly issues, but also includes a monthly subscription of $1.99 or an annual subscription of $19.99. StarFront: Collision HD -- Another second appearance occurs at #19 with StarFront: Collision HD from large international casual and mobile games development veteran Gameloft, which was released May 12th. Originally only on iPhone, this StarCraft-style real-time strategy game adapts well to iOS touch controls. Players control one of three races attempting to control a rare resource by the name of Xenodium. The game costs $6.99 and also hit #19, yesterday, on the top paid iPad apps list. Golf Digest Magazine -- Released just yesterday, May 16th, is another digital magazine from the folks at Condé Nast Digital. In at #26 is the free-to-download Golf Digest Magazine. As with The New Yorker and Vanity Fair's digital rendition, the title monetizes itself via in-app purchasing of individual issues as well as selling a monthly ($1.99) and annual ($19.99) subscription. OmniOutliner for iPad -- In at #29 is a new application (released May 12th) called OmniOutliner for iPad. Developed by The Omni Group, the $19.99 app is a productivity application that helps users to organize text into more coherent outline hierarchies that allows users to change elements such as columns, styles, make notes, and so on. As for Omni Group themselves, they are a Seattle-based developer, founded in 1993, whose productivity software revolves around Mac OS X, iPhone, and iPad. The Serpent of Isis - HD -- Ending the list this week, at #45, is a new game from mobile and casual games developer Big Fish Games, The Serpent of Isis - HD. Like the majority of the company's recently released games, Isis is another adventure-style game. This time around, players must search for a long lost piece of artwork, stolen from the Egypt Museum in Cairo, the Serpent of Isis. Currently free-to-download, the game is unlocked, in-app, at to 50% off price of $4.99, after a short amount of play.
