Emerging Top-Grossing iOS Apps: Cars 2, TeamLava Updates, Cooking & More

The balance of new releases versus updated titles on the top grossing iOS apps lists came out to about half-and-half this week, with the majority of new apps stemming from the iPad. New or not, many of yesterday's top paid apps also reappeared today, with past profiled games (e.g. Top Girl, We Rule, etc.) still holding on strong to their top positions on both platforms. New Titles Within Top Grossing iPhone Apps List Cars 2 -- It topped yesterday's paid iPhone apps list and now Cars 2 for iPhone is coming in at #7 on this week's top grossing iPhone apps list. Developed by California-based Disney entertainment subsidiary, Disney Interactive Studios, the game is a side-scrolling platformer where users race around the world as characters like Lightning McQueen, Mater, Holley Shiftwell, and Finn McMissile. Running at $0.99, the game's recent success is heavily due to buzz from the recently released Cars 2 movie from Disney Pixar. The Cars 2 game was released June 23rd. Tiny Tower -- An older application appears high in the app charts this week, coming in at #9. Tiny Tower is a business simulation from NimbleBit in which players construct and manage their own hotel, decorating it the way they see fit. Free-to-play, the game monetizes through in-app purchases ranging in price from $0.99 to $29.99. As for the developer itself, NimbleBit is a small 2007-founded iOS developer out of San Diego, whose iOS title Pocket Frogs was recently announced to be coming to DeNA's Mobage platform. Tiny Tower is also ranked #18 on iPad. Fashion Story -- Fashion Story is the latest in a series of reappearing TeamLava games, moving up the top grossing iOS charts again, coming in at #10 (#17 on iPad). The social game is an app designed for the female demographic, allowing users to create and manage their own boutique and avatar as the peruse various shops for new clothing. Fashion Story's rise, like with both Restaurant Story and Bakery Story, is due to noted weekly updates (the last of which was June 27th) that add new clothing, decorations, and other virtual items. As a freemium game, the app monetizes through the use of in-app virtual currency purchases. TeamLava is part of Redwood Shores-based mobile developer Storm8. Flick Golf! -- Another top paid app from yesterday appears again in the form of Flick Golf! Appearing at #31, the title allows players to play rounds of golf on courses around the world using their fingers as golf clubs. Through the touch controls, players can control spin and force, as well as compensate for wind and standard golf course hazards. Last updated March 25th, the rise is due to a marked down "special price" of $0.99. As for the game's maker, it is developed by United Kingdom-based indie company, Full Fat Games. Founded in 1996, the developer hosts several games outside the iOS platform on handheld gaming devices (e.g. Nintendo DS) and Xbox. TomTom U.S.A. -- TomTom U.S.A. is a $49.99 GPS navigation app and marks one of the few non-game titles on the top iPhone app lists. The application appears at #38 due to a June 27th update that has added significant updates to the TomTom maps, traffic coverage, and the ability to add multiple stops to one's routes. TomTom U.S.A. is credited to TomTom International, a two decade old location and navigation products company headquartered in Amsterdam. In addition to its purchase price, the application also hosts two in-app purchases for $5.99 and $19.99. New Titles Within Top Grossing iPad Apps List Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing -- The new June 23rd-released title of Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing topped yesterday's paid iPad apps list and it's coming in at #2 for top grossing chart (#18 for iPhone). Developed by Tokyo-based international games developer and publisher SEGA, this new game is a racing title akin to the Mario Kart franchise. The difference is this game grants players the ability to race as a variety of iconic SEGA characters from games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Monkey Ball and pits them against each other within race tracks from their various game worlds. The game costs $4.99. Battleship for iPad -- More iPad titles from yesterday's top paid charts rise up the top grossing charts with Battleship for iPad at #16.The game is an official iPad rendition of the Battleship board game. Along with visual effects, the naval battle title also hosts a single player and local, iPad-only, multiplayer. Developed by international core games developer and publisher, Electronic Arts, the quick rise of the June 23rd-released game is also due in part to an introductory sales price of $2.99. BackStab -- BackStab is the latest game from the long running international mobile and casual games developer and publisher Gameloft. The new game (released June 23rd) is centered around the story of a former English Royal Navy officer, Henry Blake who was betrayed and wrongly imprisoned. Through primarily stealth-based mechanics, players attempt to find revenge in this tropical pirate-style game. As it stands, the game costs $6.99 and is ranked at #29 on iPad and #46 on iPhone. Cars 2 Storybook Deluxe -- Another app is rising due to the recent release of the Cars 2 film. In at #35 on the top grossing iPad apps list is the digital book Cars 2 Storybook Deluxe at $5.99. This children's book is centered around the storyline of the film, but comes with narration (users can also record their own voice for narration), a myriad of mini games, and interactive characters. Like with the previously noted Cars 2 game, Cars 2 Storybook Deluxe comes from another branch of The Walt Disney Company, Disney Publishing Worldwide Applications, who, as the name suggests, focuses on digital storybooks for the iOS platform. Cooking Light Recipes: Quick and Healthy Menu Maker -- Last on the list this week is Cooking Light Recipes: Quick and Healthy Menu Maker at #47. At $3.99, users are able to look through over 300 different healthy recipes with nutrition calculations. The title also provides users with shopping, nutrition, and extra cooking tips. Recipes can also be shared via social feeds. The app is based off of the Cooking Light magazine and is credited to Time Inc., the largest magazine media company in the United States. Cooking Light Recipes was last updated June 20th.
