Emerging Top Grossing Apps: Many Magazines, Zombies, Sky Gamblers and Scribblenauts

This week saw a lot of change on the top grossing charts thanks to iOS 5 updates and more Halloween themed releases. 5th Cell's Scribblenauts Remix took the crown this week as the top grossing iPhone app but new games from The Playforge and TeamLava also performed well. On the iPad, Newsstand greatly reorganized the charts, pushing multiple magazine titles into the top 50, but still not shaking magazine reader and newsstand Zinio from the #2 spot. New Titles on the iPhone Top Grossing Apps List Scribblenauts Remix - Yesterday’s highest ranked paid app is also this week’s top grossing app for the iPhone, currently sitting in the #1 spot on the charts. A collaboration between 5th Cell and Iron Galaxy Studios, Scribblenauts Remix challenges players to solve puzzles by conjuring any item they can think of: players can cut down a tree either by using an axe, or by summoning a horde of hungry beavers. The game uses the iCloud Interface to switch saves between multiple devices and includes Game Center support for achievements. Scribblenauts Remix is $4.99. (Update) Contract Killer: Zombies - After making a strong debut on our free app charts last week, Glu Mobile’s Halloween themed version of their Contract Killer Game, Contract Killer: Zombies is doing well, thanks to its seasonal appeal and a feature as the OpenFeint Free Game of the Day. Currently the #6 top grossing app, Contract Killer Zombies is a free to play game monetized by in-app purchases that can be used to purchase better weapons with greater zombie killing power. (Update) Real Racing 2 - As developer Firemint promised, now that iOS 5 is out, Real Racing 2 players with an iPhone 4S and an Apple TV can now play wirelessly on their HD TVs - either solo, or with split screen multiplayer, thanks to AirPlay and an October 12th update. A hyper-realistic racing game featuring 30 officially licensed cars, 15 race tracks that span 40 miles of distance, and console quality graphics thanks to Firemint’s proprietary Mint 3D engine, Real Racing 2 is the #17 top grossing app this week. It costs $4.99 and also includes optional in-app currency purchases. Zombie Life - The latest game from The Playforge keeps the so-far successful zombie theme going for the developer. Zombie Life was released on October 14th and is already #30 on the top grossing chart. The game challenges players to help a newly risen zombie blend in and integrate into society by finding their zombie pal a job, friends, furniture and presumably a few brains as well. Zombie Life is free to play and monetizes through in-app purchases. Restaurant Story: Halloween - TeamLava is jumping onto the Halloween themed update bandwagon with a seasonal version of Restaurant Story, releasing Restaurant Story: Halloween on October 10th. The Halloween version of Restaurant Story doesn’t change much - the core gameplay is still identical, but players can now add Halloween themed decorations to their restaurants and cook dishes like Eyeball Soup and Pumpkin Porridge. Just like Restaurant Story, the game is free to play with in-app purchases. It is currently #40 on the top grossing chart. New Titles on the iPad Top Grossing Apps List (Update) Quickoffice Pro HD - Texas headquartered developer Quickoffice’s office suite for iPad, Quickoffice Pro HD rises up to the #1 spot on the iPad charts this week thanks to a 20% off sale that has temporarily dropped the price to $19.99. The utility allows users to create, edit and view Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and SharePoint files on their iPads. The app supports Office 2003 and up file formats and allows users to save files as PDFs, print with AirPrint and send files to Evernote, Catch, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Yammer. The app was last updated on October 10th. (Update) Zinio - Despite competition from Apple’s Newsstand app, digital magazine shop Zinio is still holding the #2 spot on the top grossing chart. Updated on October 11th to support iOS 5, Zinio is a combination magazine reader and newsstand that allows users to purchase both single issues and subscriptions, archive back issues, read offline, add bookmarks and synchronize their library across multiple devices. The app was developed by digital distribution company Zinio. (Update) National Geographic Magazine - While Zinio may be holding its own, Newsstand has pushed a lot of magazine apps up the top grossing charts. This week’s #12 app is National Geographic Magazine. Updated on October 11th with the November issue and support for Newsstand, the digital version of the magazine includes a few features the print version doesn’t, such as a daily news feed, a Twitter feed, behind the scenes videos and interactive features. Monthly subscriptions can be purchased in the app for $1.99 and yearly subscriptions are $19.99. Single issues are $4.99. (Update) Wired - Just like National Geographic, Wired has re-entered the top grossing apps charts, this week at #22. Updated on October 11th with Newsstand support, the iPad version of Wired gives readers access to the print issue as well as extra interactive videos and features. Users can choose to purchase single issue subscriptions for $1.99, yearly subscriptions for $19.99 or back issues for $3.99. Other magazines given a popularity boost from Newsstand include The New Yorker (#23), GQ (#29), Cosmopolitan (#38) and Martha Stewart Living Magazine (#40). Sky Gamblers: Rise of Glory - Last but not least is the latest game from Namco Bandai, Sky Gamblers: Rise of Glory. Originally an Xbox Live Marketplace and Windows Phone 7 title created by Romanian developer Revo Solutions Games, the game made its iOS debut on October 11th. A World War I aerial combat game, Sky Gamblers features a campaign mode, 100 dogfight missions, 8 player realtime multiplayer, Game Center achievements, AirPlay support and Twitter sign in. The game costs $4.99 and is currently the #35 top grossing app for the iPad.
