Emerging Apps on The iOS Top Grossing List: Overkill, Angry Birds Rio & Everyday

Even though Apple's list of top-grossing apps is a little more stagnant than the free and paid categories, there are tiny shifts each week as new titles emerge. Virtually all of the apps that have recently cracked the top 50 highest-grossing list are paid, not free-to-play. New Titles Within Top 50 iPhone Top Grossing Apps List Angry Birds Rio -- The biggest title of the day is the newest release from the Angry Birds franchise, Rovio Mobile's Angry Birds Rio. Less than a day old, the game is already the #1 top grossing game for iPhone at the cost of $0.99. Filled with the same basic physics puzzles as previous titles, players launch avian artillery in order to topple structures. This time around, however, the game is a tie-in to Twentieth Century Fox's upcoming animated film Rio. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard -- Released March 17th, the $6.99 iPhone game, Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard is still doing well for itself. Created by international developer and publisher Gameloft, the game was recently #6 on the top grossing list, but has since fallen to #26. The game itself is a first-person shooter. However, unlike others from the genre, Rainbow Six titles are often considered "realistic" in that careful, strategic movements and team member deployment is crucial, as it is very easy to die. Pimp Your Screen -- Yes, the iPhone customization app, Pimp Your Screen, from European developer Apalon is still about, and still within the top grossing list. The app has dropped to #29 in the past few days, but at $0.99 it is still doing well. Released on March 10th, the title allows users to customize their iPhones with brilliant neon backgrounds, effects and icon skins. Overkill -- Overkill is a new iPhone app from the Czech Republic's Craneballs Studios. A very small three-year-old outfit of seven, the company has brought its free-to-play app all the way to #34 on the top grossing list. A first-person shooter, Overkill comes with a wide variety of enemies and weaponry, many of which must be purchased using virtual currency. The app was released March 17th. Talking Lila the Fairy -- Released March 19th, paid app Talking Lila the Fairy grabbed the #47 spot on the top grossing list. Developed by Slovenian company Outfit7, whose we profiled in January, this toy allows users to talk and interact with a 3D virtual character, a fairy named Lila. During interactions, players can easily make and share videos via YouTube, Facebook, email, or MMS. The app runs $0.99. Everyday -- In at #48 is a curious $1.99 app called Everyday. Developed by a startup videographer Adam Lisagor and Noah Kalina, who infamously took a photo of himself every day for six years, the application allows users to do the same - using push notifications as reminders. It lets them align photos perfectly so that they can make videos of how they change over the course of time. Videos can then be shared via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or Flickr. iStunt 2 -- The decade old British developer Miniclip keeps its paid app, iStunt 2, just within the top 50 grossing iPhone apps at #49. Released March 9th, the $0.99 game features absurd physics as players race down dangerous slaloms littered with pitfalls, reverse gravity, and saws. Miniclip also plays host to the online games site, Miniclip.com, and says it has a userbase around 65 million. We reviewed the game here. New Titles Within Top 50 iPad Top Grossing Apps List Angry Birds Rio HD -- Rovio Mobile is almost two for two, as their new title, Angry Birds Rio HD almost tops the top grossing apps charts for iPad as well. The physics-oriented puzzle game of launching birds into poorly designed structures holds up at #2 (though it will likely reach #1 in due time) at the cost of $2.99. As one might expect, the game play is identical to the iPhone counterpart, only with higher resolution and on a bigger screen. Like the iPhone version, Angry Birds Rio was released today, March 22nd. GarageBand -- Apple remains at #4 on the charts with its title GarageBand. Released March 10th, the $4.99 application is an iOS of the popular music editing software for Mac of the same name. As such, users can not only turn their iPad into various musical devices (e.g. guitar), but also create, mix, and edit their own music tracks. Real Racing 2 HD -- Flight Control creator, Australian developer Firemint, also remains in the top grossing list at #17 with its realistic racing game, Real Racing 2 HD. Released March 11th, the game was designed specifically for the iPad 2, but ran poorly on both a functional and visual level for first generation devices. Less than ten days later, the app was updated to better support iPad 1 owners. The game is currently $9.99. TurboTax 2010 -- TurboTax 2010 wouldn't normally fall into our coverage, but since tax day is coming up, this top grossing app has climbed to #26 in two weeks. It is developed by Intuit, which isn't actually a mobile-focused company. They have historically created tools for everyday people and small businesses to manage their finances. The TurboTax 2010 app for the iPad is essentially an iOS version of their PC software. In order to monetize, users purchase, in-app, the type of tax filing preparation they require. The cost ranges from $29.99 to $74.99. With April just around the corner, it's not entirely surprising that this free app is so high on the iOS charts. Talking Lila the Fairy for iPad -- Lila the Fairy appears in HD as well at #33 for iPad. Priced at $2.99, the Outfit7 title allows the player to interact with the virtual Lila with all the magic, poking, and talking of the iPhone version; only now, it is in higher resolution. iCookbook -- Everyone needs to eat, thus the free iCookbook is #45 on the top grossing apps list for iPad. Created by Publications International, a book publisher (with 9 million cookbooks selling a year), iCookbook offers an innovative collection of quality recipes. Interestingly enough, the cookbook incorporates voice commands when preparing dishes, moving to next steps easily when users are busy getting their hands dirty while cooking. The app monetizes through in-app purchases of more recipes. It also allows users to share (via Facebook and email) and create their own. Chicken Balls HD -- Sliding in at #50 is the new (released March 15th) title Chicken Balls HD from Endloop Systems. The game features a brave little chicken called Crash that has to defend against UFOs outside of Roswell, New Mexico in a physics-based action game. As for Endloop themselves, they are a small developer based out of Canada.
