Emerging iOS Apps: Flowpaper, Sucker Punch Mech Gunner Break Into Top Free Charts

In taking a look at this week's compilation of free iOS applications rising through the top charts, we've expanded the list to the top 50 to encompass a greater variety. As always, the free list is much more dynamic than the top paid or highest-grossing charts, and always has scores of new entrants. New Titles Within Top 50 iPhone Free Apps List Angry Birds Rio Free -- Released only on the 22nd, the new game, Angry Birds Rio, from Finnish developer Rovio Mobile has already topped all of the Apple app charts. This includes the #1 Angry Birds Rio Free, a demo version of the $0.99 app containing six puzzles. With the game, players launch different types of birds at tediously stacked structures in order to escape Rio and save the macaws Blu and Jewel from the upcoming Fox film, Rio. Having raised $42 million in a round led by Accel Partners and Atomico Ventures, the new additions to the franchise have only just begun. Overkill -- In at #2 is the first-person shooter Overkill. Released March 17th, the game has already breached the 1 million player mark. The title is developed by Craneballs Studios, a three-year-old, seven-man company out of the Czech Republic. A fairly standard shooter, Overkill monetizes itself by selling virtual currency used to purchase new and more powerful weapons in-game. Eye Illusions and Mind Tricks -- Released exactly two weeks ago, today, Eye Illusions and Mind Tricks is the #4 app in the free iPhone apps charts. A collection of optical illusion wallpapers, the application monetizes itself through advertisement. As for the developer, it is made by an enigmatic group called 8bit Factory. Having only been around since 2010, this seemingly small company's collection of apps consist of other varieties of wallpaper such as space, animals, and nature. Doodle Jump: HOP The Movie -- Another movie promotion game comes into play this week with the March 15th release of the #5 app Doodle Jump: HOP The Movie. A partership between Doodle Jump developer Lima Sky, Universal, and Illumination Entertainment the new game is intended as a promotion for the upcoming animated film Hop. Lima Sky is a small developer, consisting only of a pair of brothers based out of New York. As for the game, players control E.B., the Easter Bunny's son, who must reach the top of each level to stop an Easter chick revolt in this simple platformer. Bald Booth! -- Indigo Penguin Limited is crashing PiVi & Co.'s party, by essentially copying one of its hugely popular and simple Fatbooth, Baldbooth and Oldbooth series of apps. After releasing other party trick apps finger drums! and mood finger scan, Bald Booth! app allows users to take photographs of people and make them bald. Currently #7 on the list, the app has been out since March 17th. Flowpaper -- At #8 is yet another new title, this time from March 15th. Flowpaper is another wallpaper tool and is developed by two-man London-based design firm Diatom Studio. The difference is that this tool allows users to draw the backgrounds themselves and even share them with friends. Paper Toss: World Tour -- Paper Toss: World Tour remains in the top free iPhone apps list at #22. Released March 11th by Denver's Backflip Studios, the game allows users to shoot wads of paper at trash can amongst exotic, worldwide, locations using simple swipes and physics. It is monetized by an in-app purchase to remove ads. Backflip Studios is a roughly two-year-old developer based in Colorado, whose Paper Toss franchise just topped 50 million downloads. New Titles Within Top 50 iPad Free Apps List Angry Birds Rio HD Free -- As one might have guessed, Angry Birds Rio HD Freeis #1 on the iPad free app charts. Also released March 22nd, the Rovio Mobile game is a high definition version of the iPhone rendition and hosts six different physics-based puzzles. Overkill -- Craneballs Studios has a free iPad version of the first-person shooter Overkill as well. Monetized in the same way - virtual currency purchases - the Czechoslovakian iPad title hasn't done quite as well, monetarily, as its counterpart. However, it is still #3 on the top free app charts. The game was also released March 17th. TWCable TV -- At #6 is a television app noted last week, TWCable TV from the television provider, Time Warner Cable; the second largest multiple service provider in the United States. Released March 15th, the application allows Time Warner Cable video subscribers to watch television shows directly on on their iPad device. Doodle Jump: HOP The Movie -- Lima Sky is high on the free iPad app charts as well, at #11, with Doodle Jump: HOP The Movie. An HD rendition of the previously noted iPhone counterpart, this version comes with all the same mechanics as the other. The simple platforming game was released March 15th, and is intended as a promotion for the upcoming animated film, Hop. Ant Smasher Free for iPad -- Jumping all the way down to #27, we come across the title Ant Smasher from a company called Best, Cool & Fun Games. Based out of Latin America and founded by investment banker Guilherm Schvartsman, the company states that it has released north of 70 casual games with 27 million users around the world. The app, released March 19th, is a simple game where users try to smash ants with their finger while avoiding bees, and is monetized, primarily, through in-app purchases and advertisements. Sucker Punch Mech Gunner -- More movie promotions appear at #38 with Sucker Punch Mech Gunner. Released March 17th, the game was created by a Denver digital agency Mondo Robot on behalf of Warner Bros. for the upcoming action movie, Sucker Punch. In the game, players pilot a mech suit through an alternate history version of a World War I battlefield. Gems Swap HD -- Gems Swap HD comes in at #42 and is developed by Social Mobile Designs. Released March 19th, the game is a match-three, Bejeweled-style game that plays, more or less, the exact same way. Interestingly enough, Social Mobile Designs is also known as MonkeyBananaRaffle, whose site contains a myriad of other simple, casual games to play online. Zite -- Exactly two weeks old, today, the iPad, digital news magazine Zite squeezes in at #44. The application allows users to view personalized news and media from various websites, in a magazine-like format, and can also be synced to Google Reader and Twitter feeds. As for developer Zite Inc., the company is based out of Vancouver, Canada and has tallied well over 100,000 downloads for its first application.
