Elisabeth Bumiller Becomes NYT DC Bureau Chief

Replacing Carolyn Ryan after less than two years.

Washington editor Elisabeth Bumiller is replacing Carolyn Ryan as the New York Times Washington bureau chief, reports Politico.

Sources tell Politico that the transition is a manifestation of a “longstanding editorial arrangement,” wherein Bumiller assumed many of the bureau chief’s responsibilities while Ryan focused on the publication’s 2016 coverage.

In a memo to staff, executive editor Dean Baquet said that he had faith in Bumiller’s ability to run the bureau.

“Elisabeth comes to the job with broad experience working overseas, writing books and covering the life of Washington as a Post style writer,” Baquet said.
