eByline Gets $1.5M from E.W. Scripps

E.W. Scripps funneled $1.5 million in first-round funding into eByline, which describes itself as a “virtual newsroom” for freelance journalists and reporters to make their work available for syndication, VentureBeat reported.

Publishers pay reporters directly, with no annual subscription fees, and eByline receives 8 percent of each transaction, according to VentureBeat, which added that the site requires contributors to have at least one year of reporting experience and to provide clips and educational background.

eByline is based in Los Angeles and has four employees and content partners including ProPublica, Variety, and The Texas Observer, VentureBeat reported.
