Social Media has provided non-profit and charity organizations a new way to spread awareness and advocate for social change.
Earth Justice, a non-profit public interest law firm dedicated to representing the environment, has launched a new social media campaign to protect endangered species.
The company’s tag line says all: “EARTHJUSTICE: Because the earth needs a good lawyer.” The slogan personifies the Earth in order to raise how the environment has little protection against an increasingly hedonistic society. The firm asks, after capitalism pushes an ethos of consumption, who is left to protect the earth and its resources?
Earth Justice is engaging with social media to spread awareness of their “Save our Skins” campaign, a campaign that gives voice to animals and educates the public about congressional plans that will harm a number of wildlife. Animals at risk include the polar bear, the gray woolf, and salmon.
The “Save our Skins” campaign is being circulated throughout the blogosphere, with more than 2K people “liking” their Facebook page. Their Twitter account, however, is not as easily accessible, as searching “save our skins” and “earth justice” on Twitter doesn’t direct you to their group. The campaign does, however, have a successful YouTube following, as they’ve disseminated a number of YouTube videos that educate the public about the impact of erasing these animals from our ecosystem.
In addition to spreading awareness, Earth Justice hopes that their new online advocacy will inspire animal lovers to take action and pressure congress to uphold the Endangered Species Act.
