500,000 Followers Can Net You $350 For A Sponsored Tweet

You don’t have to be a celebrity to be racking in the big bucks on social media. Smart Money has the scoop on how 5 people are making millions thanks to their Twitter followers, and how just a handful can earn you a nice piece of change.

Remember @s#*!mydadsays? It’s the Twitter feed that Justin Halpern set up to record the witticisms of his charmingly coarse 73-year-old dad. With tweets like “You know, sometimes it’s nice having you around. But now ain’t one of those times. Now gimme the remote, we’re not watching this bullshit,” it quickly moved from cult darling to mainstream success. Justin signed on to write a book and create a TV show starring William Shatner, and he’s earned a cool $1 million from this Twitter account’s spin-offs.

But you don’t have to make a book and TV deal in order to profit from your Twitter account. Smart Money spoke to several Twitterati who have a few thousand followers who are able to make some nice pocket money by being smart with their tweeting.

For instance, comedy account @menshumor makes $350 for a single sponsored tweet sent to its 1.5 million followers, while another account, @notebook, makes “six figures” from its 2.5 million followers.

And the biggest Twitter payday? Lady Gaga’s 20+ million followers have instant access to her thoughts at their fingertips, and this is worth a massive $30 million – one third of Gaga’s total earnings for the past year, which a publicist estimates as the value of this frictionless connection to her fans.
