Don’t Pass The Baton

You may have heard this small little, barely promoted fact recently: Katie Couric takes over anchor chair at CBS Evening News tonight.

After reading all of the stories last week about Bob Schieffer’s departure from the desk, we propose adding a new cliche to the list of overused words and phrases journos should avoid: “passing the baton.”

Los Angeles Times used it twice in one story. That should be illegal. The New York Times also fell prey to the phrase (not counting the baton quote from Schieffer himself). And the Philadelphia Inquirer — yeah, we caught you too.

Heck, even we’re guilty.
