Do Jobseekers Need Protection From Their Credit Reports?

Employers are increasingly using applicants’ credit reports to evaluate a candidate’s worthiness—almost 40% of employers, by a recent survey. But a new bill in Congress could change that.

H.R. 3149 would amend the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) to prohibit the use of credit checks against prospective and current employees during the hiring process.

MainStreet says the bill is “winding its way through Congress,” which isn’t entirely true—it’s still in committee, which means basically nothing.

But still. This can be only a good thing, as a person in a lot of debt is not going to get out of debt by being unemployed…
