The continuing growth of Philadelphia STYLE and DC STYLE has created the need for a circulation director at DLG Media Holdings, LLC and Birney is in a unique position to help guide the magazines to further success. After nearly 15 years in the circulation business, Birney has a great deal of award-winning experience to draw upon — she was the recipient of Circulation Management magazine’s Circulation Excellence Award for 2005.

“Lori is one of the most respected circulation professionals in the industry,” says Dana Spain-Smith, COO of DLG Media Holdings, LLC. “We expect that she will bring her skills and knowledge of the Philadelphia and Washington areas to expand the STYLE brand and enhance the efficiency our circulation model, increase subscription and renewal rates and provide up to the minute information for our advertisers. The need for our first circulation director demonstrates the staying power and growth potential of Philadelphia STYLE and DC STYLE.”

“I look forward to returning to the world of regional magazines,” notes Birney. “At a city-based publication, I thrive on the many diverse responsibilities that I don’t have at a national company, and will be able to grow and sharpen DC STYLE and Philadelphia STYLE where they need it most. I’m also excited to be back in Philadelphia, which I consider ‘my city,’ and where I spent most of my career.”

After completing a degree in advertising from Pennsylvania State University, Birney became subscription manager at The Washingtonian. She moved on to become a circulation manager for Cardinal Business Media in Fort Washington, PA, maintaining circulation for six publications, planning promotions and preparing budgets. In 1997, Birney became subscription manager at MetroCorp in Philadelphia, and worked her way up to circulation director. After nine years at MetroCorp, Birney moved to New York to take the post as circulation director for Future US.

Schmalbach comes to DLG from Main Line Today, where she was assistant editor, and is charged with the content and continuity of all three of DLG Media’s Web sites (DCStyleMag.com, PhillyStyleMag.com and ACConfidential.com) as well as managing the site’s interactive channels, including ‘blogs, podcasts and streaming video.
