Disney Sells Advance ‘Toy Story 3’ Tickets on Facebook

In anticipation of its June 18 release date, “Toy Story 3” advance tickets are now available for purchase on Facebook, courtesy of an application created by Disney. The app, Disney’s Tickets Together, allows Facebook users to purchase advance tickets with their friends and then publish the fact to the news feed.

Disney has been working on the app for months, The New York Times reported, and introduced it in conjunction with online vendors like Fandango.com and MovieTickets.com on May 26. If Disney deems the app “successful,” the company is likely to enable ticket purchases for other films. So far the app has been used to purchase tickets in groups as large as 80; Facebook does not get a cut of the profits.

Ticket sales on Facebook seems to be one more step in the trend of commerce we’ve seen emerging on the platform. We saw a move similar to Disney’s by AtCost.com last week, which partnered with Razorgator Tickets, the Phoenix Suns and that team’s player Amar Stoudemire to sell NBA tickets on his Page.

Although currently only 20% of movie tickets are purchased online, introducing the option on Facebook is sure to be a boon to movie attendance, which has been waning in recent years. The Memorial Day weekend’s take was the lowest in 17 years.

So far the “Toy Story 3” Facebook Page has more than 739,200 Likes and Page administrators have been promoting Tickets Together in status updates and on the Wall.

Disney’s Tickets Together not only lets a Facebook user purchase tickets for themselves and friends (either other Facebook friends or friends who have email addresses), but also includes a free ticket sweepstakes.

After allowing the app access to your profile, it displays theaters and showtimes for “Toy Story 3” based on your profile location. The app allows you to choose where you want to see the movie and when, then prompts you to either select Facebook friends or friends with email addresses with whom to attend the movie. You can then click to purchase, the app confirms your date, time and price, and prompts you to enter credit card information.

One other thing the app does is create an Event for you and your friends around the time/date for which you purchase tickets. Additionally, an RSVP event ad featuring your name is created inviting your Facebook friends to attend.
