Nobody puts Baby in a corner … on Facebook? Despite being released in 1987, when social media meant sharing the newspaper over coffee, Dirty Dancing has seen its Facebook page attract more than 9.5 million fans.

According to TheWrap.com, the page had some 700,000 fans in 2009, but it was propelled by big news about its co-stars — the death of Patrick Swayze, and Jennifer Grey’s appearances on Dancing with the Stars.

A Lionsgate executive told TheWrap.com the studio would try to take advantage of the unexpected popularity of the film’s Facebook page by developing a social game based on the characters portrayed by Swayze and Grey.

TheWrap.com added that Dirty Dancing currently boasts more Facebook fans than The Dark Knight (6.7 million), Iron Man (4.5 million), or Toy Story 3 (721,164), all obviously much more recent movies.

Lionsgate executive vice president of home entertainment and marketing Anne Parducci said of the Dirty Dancing Facebook page, “It has exceeded our expectations, but it also comes with hard work and dedication on our behalf to build that audience.”
