Nick Ascheim was key to digital expansion plans

Nick Ascheim has bolted from the Associated Press, a little over a year after the news cooperative poached him from The New York Times. As general manager of AP Digital, Ascheim oversaw AP Gateway, a new business unit that was tasked with creating new products for its members, including consumer-paid news products.

Ascheim is moving on to the BBC, where he'll be svp of digital media, overseeing for North America and developing new products. He starts May 16.

Ascheim’s loss is the second high-level one in recent weeks for the AP, following the departure of Jane Seagrave, chief revenue officer (and Ascheim’s boss), who left in March after 30 years with the organization to become publisher of the Vineyard Gazette on Martha’s Vineyard. 

No word yet from the AP if a replacement for Ascheim will be named.
