Detroit Papers Seek 12 Percent Pay Cut

The publishers of the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News are seeking a 12 percent pay cut from their employees followed by a two-year wage freeze, reports the Newspaper Guild.

The Guild says that these demands follow a wage freeze that has been in effect since 2008, furloughs, and higher employee costs for health insurance.

The five contracts that cover 1,400 employees (newsroom, press, more) at the two newspapers were set to expire Saturday; they’ve been extended until Oct.
