Designer Salaries Slightly Down

HOW’s 2010 Design Salary Report shows what designers around the country are taking home each year.
The not so big shocker: salaries in 2010 were a little lower than they were the last time the report came out, in 2008.

As usual, where yo ulive, what kind of work you do, and where you do it all have an effect on salaries.

Dedicated design firms as well as ad agency designers both saw an average increase in their salaries, offset by losses on the in-house and/or freelance side.

And while pay may have fallen on the West Coast, in the south, and northeast, NYC area designers got an average of 18.5 percent more in 2010 than they did two years ago.

Creative directors and art directors saw their salary rise while designers and production artists were less in demand.

Perhaps most tellingly, when HOW asked survey respondents if they had been out of work at any time during the past 12 months, 12.6 percent said yes.
