Condé Nast Portfolio was one of the most costly magazine launches in recent memory, burning through a reported $100 million. Few were more ardent in their support for the launch than its publisher, David Carey. Still, the high-end business monthly ran up against a harsh economic climate and confusion over its editorial concept, a blend of business and lifestyle aimed at men and women.

Condé Nast folded it after just two years.

Carey, who recently became president of rival Hearst Magazines, probably won’t be seeing the birth of another publication of that scope anytime soon, if ever.
