CNN’s Whitaker to Celebrate “My Long Trip Home”

Mark Whitaker, EVP and  managing editor of CNN Worldwide, will return to Washington on Tuesday October 25th to celebrate the publication of his book “My Long Trip Home.”  Hosted by Democratic consultant Mandy Grunwald,  Huffington Post’s Howard Fineman and Amy Nathan, the book party will be held at Grunwald’s Georgetown home, just down the street from where Whitaker lived while working as Washington bureau chief for NBC News.

Whitaker’s family memoir “My Long Trip Home” traces the fascinating story of his parents, an interracial couple who met in the 195os:

“His father, Syl, the charismatic grandson of slaves  who grew up the child of black undertakers from Pittsburgh and went on to become a groundbreaking scholar of Africa. His mother, Jeanne Theis, was a shy World War II refugee from France whose father, a Huguenot pastor, helped hide thousands of Jews from the Nazis and Vichy police. They met in the mid-1950s, when he was a college student and she was his professor, and they carried on a secret romance for over a year before marrying and having two boys.”

Whitaker’s book won’t be released until October 18th but you can pre-order it here.  And check out the below video for more on his work.
