CNN Poaches BuzzFeed’s Entire Political Research Unit

Andrew Kaczynski and his team start tomorrow.

Why hire away one staffer when you can get an entire team? This at least is what CNN has done, snagging BuzzFeed’s Andrew Kaczynski along with the other three members of the political research unit–deputy politics editor Kyle Blaine and political reporters Nate McDermott and Christopher Massie–known collectively as the K-File.

As Huffington Post’s Michael Calderone reports, Kaczynski and the team, which was responsible for digging deep into candidate’s histories and reporting on their finds, starts tomorrow. They notified BuzzFeed today.

“To be at the biggest name in news for the last month of what has been the craziest election in modern history is just a great opportunity for me and everybody on our team,” Kaczynski told Calderone. “When the opportunity was there, we made sure we took it.”

CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker and BuzzFeed editor Ben Smith have recently, and very publicly, been critical of each other’s operations, but CNN says this hire is not about that.

Smith’s response, in a statement: “I guess this means that CNN has seen the value in doing the kind of tough reporting on Donald Trump that BuzzFeed News has been doing all presidential cycle and we wish Andrew good luck.”
