Changes at Roll Call: Kurtz, Parks, Smith and Savener Upped!

In a memo to staff, Roll Call Editor Charlie Mitchell announced changes to the paper's editorial structure that will "enhance the editors' ability to guide the news team, improve the editorial work flow and recognize the outstanding contributions of several key players." According to the memo, Dan Parks has been named Managing Editor (News) and Josh Kurtz has been promoted to Managing Editor (Operations). Deputy Copy Chief, Matt Savener will become Roll Call's new Copy Chief and Katie Smith is assuming the title Deputy Managing Editor. The full memo after the jump. From: Charlie Mitchell To: Editorial All Subject: Staff Update I am happy to announce a few important changes in our editorial structure that will enhance the editors ability to guide the news team, improve the editorial work flow and recognize the outstanding contributions of several key players. Dan Parks will be taking on new responsibilities as Managing Editor (News) and will be a key member of the news editing team. He will work alongside Erin Billings in guiding the House and Senate reporting teams, and contribute his editing skills as needed throughout the newsroom. Effective immediately, David Drucker, Jackie Kucinich, Jessica Brady and Kate Hunter will report to Dan. IÂ¹m very excited that we can increase our editorial bandwidth in this manner. Erin, as Deputy Editor, remains my top lieutenant for news content and, thanks to this realignment, will now have more time to devote to strategy, individual reporters and stories. Erin has done an amazing job over the past year managing an eight-member reporting team; this move should give her a bit more space to survey the battlefield and map strategy. Emily Pierce, Tory Newmyer, Steve Dennis, John Stanton and Jennifer Bendery will continue to report to Erin. Josh Kurtz is being promoted to Managing Editor (Operations). Josh will oversee the copy/production team, and take on many of the administrative tasks that keep this place running. He and I will share responsibility for overseeing special sections. Josh did an incredible job managing special sections over the past year, and week in and week out demonstrated his knowledge of every aspect of our news operation. Will Taylor and Katie Smith will report to Josh. And, in recognition of the expanded role she has taken on, Katie is assuming the title Deputy Managing Editor. She will be responsible for coordinating between production and the copy desk, as well as assisting Josh in coordinating among the photo team, the news editors and copy/production. Finally, in recognition of his fine work as Deputy Copy Chief, Matt Savener will become our new Copy Chief. Matt, as many of you know, is a tenacious watchdog for accuracy and style.
